Well Done London 2012!

Farewell to the Flame

Union Jack Fancy Dress

Union Jack Costume

Today is the final day of the Paralympics and at 8.30pm this evening ‘The Festival of Flame’ will mark the end of the last few month’s spectacle of sport and cultural events, aka the Olympics, London 2012, etc.. So, will tomorrow see euphoria over the various achievements, a disappointment that it is all over, a retrospective of what went right/wrong or just a return to normal working practices? Only time will tell.  what has been great is all the union jack flags, costumes etc., that have been worn, and waved,  as the entire country enjoyed the Olympic spirit. There are of course, many who have been working through the last few months and been asked to do much more than their normal daily routine. We would like to say well done to these and also the countless number of volunteers who have got involved with so many aspects of this year’s historic twin events. Have a good day.

Props & Frocks Says Welcome To The Olympic Flame

Need a Union Jack flag to wave? We have plenty of stock & are open until 6pm today.Union Jack Products

Great excitement here in our part of Essex today as the Olympic Flame comes within torching distance of us here at Battlesbridge. It is visiting Basildon – our nearest centre of major population. Of course such are the vested sponsorship interests in this ongoing event that we (and the organisers of the various welcoming celebrations around the country) are apparently restricted in what words and phrases we are allowed to mention. The same restrictions don’t enable us to offer much in the way of relevant costuming – we might be able to rustle up some running outfits, in the style of ‘the men with moustaches’ and we have some inflatable Olympic Torches you can hold yourself, but we cannot in any way relate them to the events of this particular year – the figures have been copyrighted.

Want to join in the spirit of the event? Pop in to have a look at our range of Union Jack products

We are surprised this year’s calendar and diary manufacturers, and train companies with journeys leaving just after eleven minutes past eight in the evening, have got away with it so far.

Happy Diamond Jubilee

Hopefully today and tomorrow you will all be out celebrating the two June bank Diamond Jubilee Ideasholidays and will not have time to read these blogs. Props & Frocks may be closed for both days (you can still order fancy dress online) , but for those of you who are glued to your computer screens (hopefully, not literally), what can we offer you in the form of other entertainment?

Your area might of course be holding its own street party or general get-together.  Perhaps you might have been lucky enough to get tickets for the free concert at Buckingham Palace? There are also many events and attractions in Essex (and further afield) taking place over the next couple of days, but whatever you choose to do, we hope you have fun and look forward to seeing you on Wednesday when we re-open after the long weekend.

Diamond Jubilee Big Lunch

Today is the day for the Big Lunch. Now in its fourth year, we know that many are combining the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee with the lunch, whether it’s an informal picnic, street Union Jack Buntingparty or just a general get together.  So, don your party hat, get out the streamers and enjoy yourselves.  We are open today if you still need Union Jack bunting and other accessories. Obviously we are hoping that the weather will do its bit – especially after its antics in the early part of last month, but even there, we have noted one or two suppliers hedging their bets with a range of union jack wellies! Even if they do not get used this weekend, they will doubtless come in useful for some of the other festivities scheduled for this summer or for this year’s Festival Season, which carries on regardless, despite the lack of the Glastonbury experience.

Props & Frocks stocks a large range of Union Jack products, including:

  • Union Jack Bunting
  • Union Jack Hand Flags
  • Hats
  • Wigs
  • Bow Ties
  • Waistcoats
  • Headbands
  • Dresses

Queen’s Jubilee Party Ideas

Stock up on your Union Jack flags as next Sunday it’s the Big Jubilee Lunch and time to break out the festive bunting up and down the land, as neighbourhoods, streetsUnion Jack Bunting and the general public join together, not only celebrating the Big Lunch (which is now in its fourth year) but also the 60 years of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II’s reign. We were mentioning a few days ago about the longevity of some TV programmes, some of which were first seen in the decade when the Queen ascended the throne.  The length of the Queen’s reign is certainly something to be celebrated, whether you are a royalist or a republican, so find out what’s going on in your area and get involved, after all isn’t this supposed to be what localism is all about?

Props & Frocks has a large union jack range of costumes, wigs, hats & party accessories including flags and bunting.

For those involved in finance, of course today is the final day of the financial year but for others life goes on as normal and today we celebrate that lesser-known event of American history, when, in 1621 the Mayflower leaves Plymouth, USA, to sail back to Britain. There was not so much fuss on this occasion and in fact, despite its pivotal role in the colonisation of America, the ship was just broken up shortly after arriving back home. So much for preservation of artefacts!

Nowadays the American influence can be seen everywhere. When it comes to costumes, some of our most popular ranges are often heavily influenced by the American Dream. Movies and music were two of the main backdrops of the twentieth century and although they continue to be so, over the past decade sport has certainly taken centre stage. This year with the eyes of the world focused on Britain, both for the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics, maybe it will be the British Dream influencing the costume market.

International Flags & Bunting

As we look back on the last few weeks, it’s been a bit of a rollercoaster ride, with England crashing out of the World Cup early on and still not winning at Wimbledon (although the boys’ doubles was won by the British pairing of Liam Broady and Tom Farquarharson). Have you noticed how the media suddenly embrace the whole of the UK, when England is not in the contest?

We can console ourselves with the fact that on July 30th 1966 we did actually beat (West) Germany 4-2 to win the World Cup for the one and only time (so far!). That was also the date, (but not the year, which was actually 1930) that the very first final of the World Cup was held. The finalists on that date were Uruguay v Argentina, with a 4-2 win by Uruguay. England players did not take part on this inaugural occasion as they didn’t fancy the sea voyage! Though the World Cup may be over for another four years, we have both the European Championships and the Olympics to look forward to in 2012. Don’t forget that at Props n Frocks we stock national flags and bunting throughout the year.
