1940s Costumes & Uniforms

We cannot get through the summer without at least one mention of World War II and in particular the Battle of Britain, which commemorates its 70th anniversary this year. Now most 1940s costume requests we receive tend to be for uniforms, particularly when it comes to males (makes them look ‘dashing’, don’t you know!) but sometimes original uniforms can be a wee bit small, not to mention hot and heavy. The replica uniforms that Props n Frocks currently offer for sale tend to be American based, a 1940s American GI Costumes for men and women, so hiring may be a better bet, particularly if you are heading off to the likes of Goodwood during August or September, or the Twinwood festival (August 28th-30th).

At Props n Frocks, we also stock a range of accessories such as seamed stockings, a gas mask and that essential requirement for those in uniform, the Brigadier or Wing Commander Moustache (if you haven’t cultivated your own). For those preferring civvies, our range of pinstripe Gangster Costumes will work for those 1940s Spivs, and if you have your own suit, you could include a Spiv moustache and a trilby hat, to complete the look.

4th | 6th June 2010

May and early June have been heavy with anniversaries relating to the Second World War – 65th anniversary of the end of the War (8th May), 70th Anniversary of Dunkirk (4th June) and 66th anniversary of D-Day (6th June). From July to October, the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain will doubtless be commemorated. Not only are 1940s fancy dress themed events popular around these dates, but of course many couples chose to marry following the end of the war and thus there are also many wedding anniversary events where ‘The Forties’ might be a seemingly obvious theme choice. Being an age of austerity for obvious reasons, the Forties is not the most glamorous era when it comes to costuming, and until recently it was even difficult finding 1940s style outfits (especially uniforms) in sizes and shapes, to fit today’s 21st century shape. Our Range of 1940 costumes is growing all the time, our American GI costumes have been very popular. Both the ladies and mens costumes comes in sizes right up to extra large, so are really flexible.
