Ladies Sexy Costumes

Today, it’s all about ladies sexy costumes. It’s the 11th, and because in some quarters 11 is ‘Legs Eleven’ we thought we would focus on a few points about your ‘pins’ (if you’re female). Whilst we haveSexy Ladies Costumes constantly remarked upon the current ongoing trend for ‘short and skimpy costumes’, the revelation that women had legs is just about celebrating its centenary. It is well known that generally the Victorians were prudish about even showing an ankle (it is said even chair and table legs were covered) and things were even more difficult before that: An incident is recorded where an ambassador tried to present the Queen of Spain with some silk stockings as a wedding gift and was told in no uncertain terms that the gift was unwelcome ‘as the Queen had no legs’!

Although the girls of the Moulin Rouge (and elsewhere) had been flashing their legs during the ‘Belle Epoch’ turn of the twentieth century, and  it is well known that the Bright Young Things of the 20s shocked their elders by their outrageous use of short(er) skirts, make-up, etc, the seeds of the great revelation were being sown in 1910. The French fashion couturier Paul Poiret took some of his models to the Paris races. They were wearing hobble skirts and when they were finding it difficult to walk, he made a design modification involving tearing the dresses from the hem to above the knee to ‘invent’ the slit skirt! At the time, however, they became known as ‘Tango Dresses’ because of their usefulness when the Latin-American dance craze caught on several years later.

Everyone has their own idea as to what constitutes ‘sexy’ and the fancy dress industry has produced many very short and (in our opinion) sexy costumes over the last few years. Luckily, the size range has also increased, it was not that long ago that the majority of ladies costumes were only available up to a UK dress size 12, but now many are available in sizes up to a UK size 18. As already noted, a sexy costume in the early 20th century would have been when a lady showed her ankle, imagine the outcry when the flapper dresses came in!

And what about a saloon girl costume? The costume idea of this sexy Victorian costume is probably exaggerated somewhat in our fancy dress world, but at least it gives an idea as to hitching up the front of your skirt, you can create a sexier look to encourage.

Quite often a standard costume can be made to look more sexy by wearing fishnets and other accessories.
